Occupational Categories
In Australia, engineering professions are classified into three occupational categories, with an additional category designated for migrant skills assessment.
These classifications are determined by educational qualifications and experience. Check out the categories listed bellow
Professional Engineer
Professional engineers possess a four-year engineering degree that is accredited or recognized by Engineers Australia.
They may also have equivalent qualifications from abroad or a degree accredited by a signatory to the Washington Accord.
As a professional engineer, you are equipped to:
- Concentrate on integrated systems
- Innovate and implement new engineering practices
- Utilize leadership and management skills
- Approach engineering opportunities comprehensively, considering environmental, community, and social factors
- Address a variety of challenges
Engineering Technologist
Engineering technologists possess a three-year engineering technology degree that is accredited or recognized by Engineers Australia.
They may also have equivalent qualifications from abroad or a degree accredited by a signatory to the Sydney Accord.
As an engineering technologist, you are skilled in:
- Focusing on system interactions
- Modifying and adapting established engineering practices
- Advancing engineering technology.
Engineering Associate
Engineering associates have a two-year advanced diploma or associate degree in engineering that is accredited or recognized by Engineers Australia.
They may also possess equivalent qualifications from overseas or a degree accredited by a signatory to the Dublin Accord, with a strong emphasis on practical application.
As an engineering associate, you are skilled in:
- Concentrating on specific components of the system
- Operating within codes and applying established practices and procedures.
Engineering Manager
Overseas engineers whose qualifications do not align with one of the three categories can seek a migrant skills assessment under the occupational category of Engineering Manager. This role is classified as part of the Managers ANZCO group by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, rather than as an engineering occupation.
Engineering managers typically hold a Bachelor of Engineering degree or a comparable qualification in a related field, along with relevant experience. As an engineering manager, your skills include:
- Developing, implementing, and monitoring engineering strategies, policies, and plans
- Overseeing the administration and evaluation of engineering operations within an organization.
